The name of the region "Maria la Gorda" - Chubby Maria comes from a legend. Venezuelan aboriginal woman was abducted by pirates and abandoned in end eastern Cuba. The woman whose name was Maria, settled in the area and opened an inn, where she offered food and pleasure to filibusters who arrived in the remote region of th island.

Cayo Santa Maria and Cayo las Brujas are among the best snorkeling sites.
There you'll find 20 miles of beautiful coral gardens, colourful fishes, turtles, dolphins. With shallow reefs and crystalline waters, providentially offers excellent snorkeling opportunities.

Santiago de Cuba area.
Interesting to snorkel in the Ensenada Juan Gonzales, 25 km southwest of Santiago. In the center of the ensenada - small bay, about 50 meters offshore, is a Spanish ship which was sunk in the war of 1898.
